TEHRAN, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani renewed on Monday his country's commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached with the P5+1 in July, 2015.
Iran has always honored, and will always honor, its international commitments under the nuclear deal, he said during his meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano tonight.
"The IAEA should, side by side with its verification and supervision duties over our activities, shoulder its other legal responsibilities, especially in the field of the transfer of peaceful nuclear technology, and treat its member countries on equal footing," President Rouhani stressed.
He also reaffirmed Iran's desire to continue cooperation with the IAEA in the implementation of the nuclear safeguards under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
On his part, Amano, who arrived in Iran earlier Monday, said the signing of the JCPOA was a great political achievement, and congratulated President Rouhani and the Iranian nation on the successful implementation of the historic agreement.
He expressed the IAEA desire to expand cooperation with Tehran, and agreed that there is need for the IAEA to pursue an impartial approach in dealing with its member states.
The visit of the IAEA chief to Tehran takes place two days after the UN nuclear watchdog announced that the Islamic Republic met its obligations under the JCPOA, thus commencing a process to lift the relevant international sanctions. (end) mw.gb
