Djibouti severs diplomatic ties with Iran in solidarity with Saudi Arabia

KUWAIT, Jan 6 (KUNA) -- The Republic of Djibouti has severed all diplomatic ties with Iran, in a show of solidarity with Saudi Arabia, the country's Foreign Ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday.
Djibouti strongly condemns the barbaric attacks by a group of Iranian protestors on Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad, the statement said.
"Iran is obligated to safeguard diplomatic missions and ensure the welfare of its staff. The attacks are flagrant violations of international conventions," the statement added.
"Djibouti firmly stands with Saudi Arabia in its efforts against terrorism and religious extremism," the statement noted.
On January 3, Saudi Arabia severed all diplomatic relations with Iran after a mob of protestors stormed and set ablaze the Saudi embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad.
