Election campaigns in Spain kicks off Friday

By Hanadi Watfa

MADRID, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- The campaigns for the Spanish general elections on December 20th will begin on Friday with the political atmosphere being somewhat unpredictable.
The campaigns, which will continue till December 18th, are held with four parties bidding their chances to win the election race.
The two major political parties, the People's Party led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the Socialist Workers' Party led Secretary General Sanchez Pedro are expected to face fierce competition from the rising parties of the Ciudadanos (citizens) led Albert Rivera, and the Podemos (We Can) led by Pablo Igleasias Turrion.
Considering that there are 25 percent of undecided voters, the campaigners will work hard at getting these votes which will make a huge difference for the ruling old guards and the upcoming rising youthful parties.
As part of a measure to address most important economic issue, the cunning Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy used all his political cards to delay the elections, passing the public state budget for 2016, a job usually left for the new government to decide.
In his bid to attract voters, leader of the opposition socialist party Sanchez Pedro will have to work hard to win against Rajoy and erase the fact that the current economic crisis which broke out in 2008 was largely attributed to the bad administrative choices taken by former party Secretary General Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
Meanwhile, the relatively new parties of Podemos and Ciudadanos, both founded in 2014 and 2008 respectively, are willing to win the voters' hearts and minds but they have to present some creditable plans to tackle the issues of rising unemployment rates which includes 4.1 million Spanish citizens, the crippled economy and the spread of political corruption.
Issues concerning the whole of Spain, such as the Catalonia region's aspiration for independence, will also be a crucial matter to be addressed by those involved in the election race.
With all things considered, it is predicted that the nation will witness a coalition government, to be dominated by the people's and socialists workers parties, a first in the country history. (end) hw.gta
