Egypt summons British amb. over remarks on jail verdicts

CAIRO, Aug 30 (KUNA) -- Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Sunday summoned the British ambassador in Cairo John Casson to reject his comments on a court decision handing down jail sentences to three journalists in a retrial.
The ministry said in a statement that Casson's remarks were ""unacceptable interference." Yesterday, an Egyptian court sentenced three journalists to three years in prison for "spreading false news" in what is known as the "Marriott Cell" case.
The three were arrested in a Cairo hotel in December 2013 and initially sentenced to prison in June 2014.
The ambassador said that his country actively supported stability in Egypt, but he wondered if the sentences would weaken confidence in the steps Cairo is taking to realize stability.
Responding to the remarks, the ministry said what matters is the Egyptian's confidence in the "integrity and independence of the judiciary." "Egypt is not waiting for lessons from anyone," the statement noted. (end) asm.msa
