Japan condemns W. Bank arson attack

TOKYO, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- Japan on Monday strongly condemned a recent arson attack by Jewish settlers in the West Bank that killed a Palestinian baby.
"Japan is saddened and shocked by the arson attack near Nablus on July 31, which caused the death of the 18-month-old infant and serious injury on his family including his parents," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura said in a statement.
"We call on the Israeli authorities to conduct an urgent and transparent investigation and take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence of such a tragedy," Kawamura said. The spokeswoman also expressed Japan's condolences to the family and prays for early recovery of those injured.
According to media reports, Jewish settlers set fire to the family's home at the Palestinian village of Duma in the northern West Bank. The baby was killed, and his four-year old brother and both his parents were seriously wounded. (end) mk.hb
