Belgian media: Kuwait key contributor to aid organisations

BRUSSELS, March 31 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has always been a very keen contributor to humanitarian aid organisation, and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is one of the biggest sponsors of the UN, said Belgian broadcaster VRT's correspondent Steven Decraene in a dispatch from Kuwait Tuesday.
The report published also in "Flandersnews" said that over 78 countries and 40 international organisations participated in the third international humanitarian pledging conference in Kuwait City.
The main goal of this conference is to obtain as much financial support as possible for the Syrian people in need.
It noted that in his opening statement, UN secretary general Ban ki-Moon, asked for USD 8.6 billion to cover only the needs of 2015.
"That gives an idea of how big the challenge is. But perhaps even more than the money, the world is waiting for a definitive solution for this Syria crisis," he said.
This can only be a political solution, the Kuwaiti Minister of Information Salman Sabah Al-Sabah said, "the war in Syria can be solved if true discussions are started between all parties." Belgian ambassador to Kuwait, Andy Detaille, pledges 10.5 million euros for the Syrian help cause.
"Belgium already committed itself to give this money, moreover, our government also donates four million euros to other humanitarian projects related to the crisis in Iraq. So in total, Belgium will give around 14.5 million euros for people in need," said Detaille.
His Highness the Amir of Kuwait announced at the opening of the aid-pledging conference a contribution of USD 500 million for the Syrian people. (end) nk.bs
