Press delivers crucial role on highlighting Syrian tragedy - Info Minister

KUWAIT, March 30 (KUNA) -- Minister of Information and State Minister for Youth Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud Al-Salem Al-Sabah underlined the media's important role in highlighting the "tragic" plight of Syrians as well as international efforts aimed at easing their suffering.
Upon meeting several members of local and international press next to the Third International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria press centre slated for Tuesday, he indicated to the humanitarian situation in Syria reaching a "difficult and dangerous" milestone.
This has reflected negatively on the countries of the region, he added.
He stressed Kuwait's commitment, under the directions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, towards supporting Arab, regional and international efforts to provide relief for the Syrian people, particularly as Kuwait prepares to host a third round of talks.
We hope that this conference, to which the state has provided the media with every facilitation possible, is successful in transmitting this message to the world," he said.
About the size of pledges, he expected a rise due to the pattern of the two past events which rose from USD 1.5 billion in 2013 to USD 2.4 billion the year later. "We are anticipating that this conference achieves a record contribution that would achieve our goals," said the minister.
Assessing the Syrian conflict, he stressed the need for a political solution. "We sought at the Arab League and the Security Council to resolve the issue, but it is extremely unfortunate that the crisis has increased in magnitude.
"This is what we had feared and we hope that all sides reach a solution to the crisis through the Syrians themselves," he concluded. (end) kt.sd
