Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled urges resolution of humanitarian crises' root causes

KUWAIT, March 30 (KUNA) -- First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah called for the resolution of root causes of humanitarian crises, and affirmed that Kuwait would continue its support for people in need.
"The growing number of humanitarian crises in our world compel us to seriously look into their root causes and address them," Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said during a banqeut held on occasion of the visit by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and to honor UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief coordinator Valerie Amos on occasion of leaving her office.
He said Kuwait realized the importance of partnership with the UN and its agencies, noting that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah announced during the UN honoring as a "Humanitarian Leader," Kuwait's doubling its contributions to the UN Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN emergency fund.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled hoped the Third International Pledging Humanitarian Conference for Syria, due tomorrow, would help alleviate suffering of the Syrian people, just like the two previous conferences that were held in Kuwait in 2013 and 2014 did.
The foreign minister said the Syria conflict, which entered its fifth year, killed more than 210,000 people and displaced over 12 million others, while the international community was failing to act.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled paid tribute for Amos for her service and dedication, citing her involvement in the preparation for the first and second pledging conferences. (pickup previous) bs
