By Abdulnasser Jubara BERLIN, March 28 (KUNA) -- Germany's Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Gerd Muller said that upcoming aid-pledging talks for Syrian refugees in Kuwait are a chance to increase global solidarity with the Syrians.
He regarded the third such event, hosted by Kuwait in the space of three years, as a podium and opportunity where international donors may fulfill their required pledges of support to Syrian refugees and the nations that are accommodating them, like Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
On his recent visit to Lebanon, he told KUNA that his nation had pledged 50 million euros by means of additional assistance, and "in Kuwait, we will present pledges worth an additional 55 million euros." Outlining what these funds would be used for, the minister said they would be invested in education and relief efforts through the UN-administered World Food Programme (WFP).
"Refugees at camps in these neighbouring countries need assurances on a medium term basis which requires providing their young generation with education," he explained.
Some 12.5 million Syrians have been displaced internally and across neighbouring countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, along with Iraq and Armenia to a lesser degree, due to the conflict in their country that has entered a fifth year.
Kuwait hosted two events in 2013 and 2014 which raised pledges worth a total USD 3.9 billion - USD 1.5 billion and USD 2.4 billion respectively - from international donors aimed at alleviating their suffering.
At both, Kuwait donated a collective USD 800 million, including USD 300 million and USD 500 million. (end) anj.sd.rk
