DOHA, March 23 (KUNA) -- Qatari academics and journalists have hailed Kuwait's leading humanitatian role and its supportive stance in easing the burden on Syrians displaced internally or settling up as refugees in neighbouring countries.
Speaking to KUNA, they stressed the urgency of an upcoming international aid-pledging conference for Syrian refugees due to be hosted by Kuwait for the third time in three years on March 31.
Qatar University's Professor of Political Media Khaled Al-Jaber expressed admiration and appreciation of the role Kuwait is assuming on the regional and global scales.
It is this role that makes His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's UN Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait's Humanitarian Centre titles both well-deserved, he said.
The conference, also known as Kuwait III, is due to be hosted at a tough time for the Syrian people, added Al-Jaber, as war and conflict in their nation have entered the fifth year now.
Along with the importance of the pledges to providing food to eat and a shelter to sleep for the fleeing Syrians, these funds are also necessary for neighbouring nations who are struggling to accommodate the large influx of refugees, he said.
For her part, Qatari author Aisha Obaidan praised Kuwait for its charitable endeavours, and His Highness the Amir for his purposeful diplomacy.
Obaidan said she was not surprised that Kuwait has earned itself the title of UN Humanitarian Centre.
Some 12.5 million people have been displaced inside and outside of Syria due to the conflict there that has entered its fifth year.
Kuwait has hosted two events intending to raise funds from international donors aimed at alleviating their suffering in 2013 and 2014. These events helped raise pledges worth USD 3.9 billion - USD 1.5 billion and USD 2.4 billion respectively.
Kuwait donated a collective USD 800 million over both, including USD 300 million in the first and USD 500 in the second. (end) nnd.sd
