KUWAIT, March 19 (KUNA) -- Director of Middle East and North Africa at the International Peace Institute (IPI) Nejib Friji praised the role of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in the humanitarian field.
His Highness the Amir had put great efforts in saving lives and creating better conditions for millions of Syrian refugees as well as victims of crises all over the world, Friji, also media coordinator of the 3rd donors conference for Syria, said during a meeting with Kuwaiti Ambassador to Bahrain Sheikh Azzam Al-Sabah.
Meanwhile, the Director noted that Kuwait has become "a destination in the sector of relief and humanitarian work" for the UN and other charitable and rescue organizations, praising the role of Kuwaiti charities and NGOs in serving the whole region.
Kuwait, which held the first and second donors conferences for Syria in 2013 and 2014, is set to host the third edition of the event on March 31, with participation of over 40 organizations from 78 countries.
The first conference resulted in pledges of USD 1.5 billion worth of aid for the Syrians, with Kuwait donating USD 300 million, while the number increased to reach USD 2.4 billion in the second convention, with Kuwait's share being USD 500 million.
About 12.2 million Syrians have been relocated, have become homeless or refugees in and out of Syria, living in severe conditions due to the five-year civil war in their country.(end) tma.ag
