Lithuania calls for ceasefire in Gaza

BRUSSELS, July 16 (KUNA) -- President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite on Wednesday expressed "very much concern" about the situation in Gaza Strip and the raging conflict between Israel and the Palestinian groups.
"We want as soon as possible a peaceful solution and real ceasefire on both sides," she told journalists ahead of a special EU summit in Brussels tonight.
She noted that additional steps regarding Russia will be taken at the summit.
On his part, Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy said the special meeting of the 28 EU leaders will discuss about the posts of the European Council presidency and the High Representative.
"It is not sure that we'll have a decision today. We'll also listen to Jean-Claude Juncker who will explain his programme for the next five years as President of the European Commission," he told journalists.
"Then we'll discuss about Ukraine and Gaza. We condemn the violence and we support those countries as Egypt which is working to overcome the situation," he said.
Meanhwile, Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of Finland, voiced his support for Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini for the post of the EU High Representative.
"The High Representative must be strong in foreign policy, have experience, speak languages, be able to manage the foreign affairs council, told journalists.
"I am sure Mrs. Mogherini will be fine. Such nominations are always complicated and require last minute deals. I am sure something good will come up out of this," he added. (end) nk.gb
