ISLAMABAD, Feb 12 (KUNA) -- Over 40 armed insurgents have been killed and
many others wounded during a security operation in eastern Nangarhar province
of Afghanistan, officials said on Wednesday.
The spokesman for the Nangarhar province, Ahmad Zeya Abdulzai, in a press
statement said that the operation was conducted by an Afghan commando unit
from Kabul Tuesday, killing dozens of armed insurgents in the Sherzad district
of Nangarhar. He said that two commanders were among 35 rebels killed during
the offensive, which saw several others injured.
The police spokesman Hazrat Husain Mashriqiwal said that more than 40
fighters had been killed and 20 others wounded in the offensive in Kama Tarmai
and Stra Tormay areas.
According to local media reports, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said
only seven fighters had been killed and nine others injured in the operation.
He also claimed that eleven Afghan and foreign security personnel were killed
and some others injured in the offensive. (end)
