Russia demands IAEA to declare risks of military strike against Syria on nuke safety

VIENNA, Sept 6 (KUNA) -- The Russian Federation has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to reveal negative consequences of any military action against Syria.
"In order to prevent further negative scenarios, we urge the IAEA Secretariat to react without further delay to the current situation and to provide member states with full analyses of risk associated with possible American strikes on the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR), near Damascus, " Valdimir Voronkov, Russia's resident representative at IAEA, said in a letter to IAEA Secretary General Yukiya Amano.
Russia warned that any strike on Damascus could have catastrophic consequence on nuclear nonproliferation.
"In light of aggravation of the situation around Syria of particular concern is the possibility that a military action against this country may affect the sites sensitive from the point of view of nuclear safety, security and nuclear nonproliferation," Voronko wrote.
"Thus, if a bomb deliberately or inadvertently hits the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) near Damascus the consequences could be catastrophic." (end) amg.ibi KUNA 062100 Sep 13NNNN
