BRUSSELS, Jan 2 (KUNA) -- An employment court in the Belgian town of
Tongeren has convicted the Dutch store Hema of unfair dismissal after it
sacked a shop assistant because she wore a headscarf to work.
Belgian media Wednesday reported that the court has ordered the store which
is located in the city of Genk to pay the young woman a fine of six months'
The 21-year-old Belgian Muslim convert was sacked in February 2011 after
complaints about her headscarf from shoppers.
The court ruled that Hema did not have a clear neutrality policy that could
oblige the woman to take off her headscarf and as a result had no reason to
sack her on the basis of her beliefs. (end)
