VIENNA, May 11 (KUNA) -- The international efforts to counter proliferation of nuclear weapons could prove successful if all countries accepted to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iraq's Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Surood Najib has said.
Speaking to the first meeting in the preparatory cycle for the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, Najib added that the only guarantee for not using these devastating weapons is persuade nuke-capable countries to gradually get rid of them.
He added that the nuke countries have to sign pacts to assure other world countries that these weapons would not be used.
Najib underscored the importance of IAEA monitoring and inspection of all nuke activities and facilities in the world. He pointed out the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons that was held in May 2010 had adopted the work plan for creating a nuke-free Middle East.
Najib said the Arab nations welcome the organization of an international conference next November to achieve this goal.
He warned that Israeli nuclear capabilities are imposing a threat to security and peace in the Middle East and the world. (end) amq.ibi KUNA 111250 May 12NNNN
