(with photos) KUWAIT, May 7 (KUNA) -- The most recent official number of Kuwaiti students studying in the United States is 2,998, said Kristen Cammarata, Regional Educational Advising Coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa at EducationUSA on Monday.
"It is a pretty good number; a surge of 22.8 percent from last year, but we are always looking to increase it in order for us to keep up the competition with other countries such as the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia," Cammarata noted.
Her remarks to reporters came on the occasion of holding a seminar on higher education opportunities in the United States for Kuwaiti students, especially high-school graduates.
EducationUSA is a global network of more than 400 advising centers supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State.
The seminar, entitled "Planning your Future: An Introduction to the US Higher Education System", will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, as Ms. Cammarata, representatives from the US Embassy, the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education and the Public Authority for the Disabled will talk about opportunities of higher education in US universities for distinguished students, including students with disabilities. It will take place at Kuwait Graduates' Society, in Bnaid Al-Qar, Al-Soor Street at 7:00 pm.
"The (Kuwaiti) Ministry of Higher Education is definitely our top client, so our goal at EducationUSA is to make sure that we are reaching the ministry's goals and priorities, and it's our objective to help the students find their best fit," Cammarata told KUNA.
The Morocco-based official said that prior to her visit to Kuwait; she met in Washington D.C. with members of the Kuwaiti Cultural Mission "just to make sure that they (the mission) are familiar with EducationUSA's line of work." Along with the academic aspect of the seminar, the cultural angle is also present, where, according to Cammarata, EducationUSA "always give a pre-departure orientation here in Kuwait to any student from any nationality going on to study in the United States," in order to address the issue of cultural gaps.
