ALGIERS, May 1 (KUNA) -- A young man succumbed to his fatal injuries
Tuesday two days after attempting self-immolation in Jijel city, to the east
of Algiers.
Rasheq Hamza, 25-year old street vendor, set himself on fire on Sunday when
Jijel police seized his goods; he was rushed to a nearby hospital with
third-degree injuries, his family said.
The incident triggered angry protests and rioting targeting government
buildings and the police posts across the city yesterday.
The protesters were angered by the injustice and cruelty of the policemen.
In an attempt to contain the crisis and appease Hamza's family, the local
authorities invited the young man's father for a dialogue. (end)
