AMMAN, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Jordan refuted recent reports that
it plans to deploy the US Patriot air and missile defense system along its
borders with Syria.
"There isn't a grain of truth in these reports," Al-Ghad daily newspaper on
Saturday quoted Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communication and
Government Spokesman Rakan Al-Majali as saying.
He was commenting on a report by the French daily Le Figaro that Jordan is
preparing for the deployment of four Patriot batteries along the borders as a
precaution against possible Syrian missile attacks against the kingdom and
Israel.
"Jordan is not a party to any matter relating to the media mobilization
based on sensation rather than truth," Al-Majali made clear.
He attributed "the groundless allegations" to media campaigns and
psychological warfare or the ongoing cold war in the Middle East, noting that
Jordan is remote from any regional tensions or turmoil.
"The Jordanian territories haven't been, and will never be, used as a
launching pad for military attacks against neighboring countries in the region,
" he pointed out.
He added that Jordan, as an advocate of peace, backs the international
efforts aiming to stabilize the region and other parts of the world. (end)
