KUWAIT, June 6 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- The Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, issues an Amiri Decree organizing the election of Municipal Council members.
1964 -- Kuwait signs - alongside Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan - the Arab Economic Unity Agreement, aimed at establishing an economic union for the members and annulling all commercial restrictions, while setting up a common Arab boundary for foreign countries.
1965 -- Austria's first ambassador presents his credentials to the Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
1967 -- The Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, issues a decree by law establishing the National Guard as an independent panel under the umbrella of the Supreme Council of Defense with volunteer subscription for Kuwaiti nationals. The new body is to assist armed forces and public security authorities whenever asked and to contribute in national defense duties. Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Salem Al-Sabah is appointed Chief.
1967 -- The Cabinet decides to halt oil exports to the US and Britain, in response to their support to Israel in its aggression against Arab states.
1972 -- Hussein Khalaf Al-Sheikh Khazaal, a renowned Iraqi historian who documented Kuwait's history in his book "Kuwait's Political History", passes away at the age of 60. The historian dies at Kuwait's Al-Sabah Hospital, but is buried in his homeland. The Ministry of Information had banned his book from circulation in 1962 due to historic inaccuracies.
1976 -- The Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, issues an Amiri Decree establishing the Higher Institute for Musical Arts.
1979 -- The Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issues a decree by law approving Kuwait's membership in the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and its 1978 protocol.
1993 -- The Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issues a decree establishing the Cabinet's Consultative Bureau, comprising nine members, aimed at providing consultation and conducting studies on different issues and in different sector. Its first meeting is held on October 12, 1993 under the chairmanship of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
1995 -- Kuwaitis head to polling stations to elect their representatives for the Municipal Council, with 43 candidates competing over ten seats. Abdulrahman Al-Houti is appointed Chairman.
1997 -- MP Abdullah Al-Naibari escapes an assassination attempt. He suffers two bullet wounds, one in the shoulder and the other in his lower jaw. Assailants are arrested and the Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, orders the Ministry of Health to airlift the MP to receive treatment in the United States.
1998 -- The National Assembly approves a draft law amending articles of electoral law stipulating that voters or nominees are not allowed to contest constituency of candidacy after results are announced. They still have the right to contest, but immediately after the registration period.
2000 -- Al-Watan publishing house begins issuing the American Newsweek magazine in its Arabic edition, two years after an agreement was signed in this regard.
2003 -- The Public Authority for Applied Education and Training establishes the first center in Kuwait for projects of students of vocational studies. The center incorporates more than 24 projects and provides a number of direct and indirect job opportunities.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurates Dasman Diabetes Research Center. The center includes specialized clinics for diabetes, in addition to laboratories.
2008 -- Kuwait becomes a non-permanent member of the Executive Bureau of the International Society of Radiology.(end) adf.asa KUNA 060902 Jun 11NNNN
