Kuwait MPs okay judicial changes

KUWAIT, Oct 6 (KUNA) -- The Kuwaiti parliamentary legislative and legal committee has unanimously given the thumbs up to proposed amendments to judicial laws.
Speaking to reporters following the committee meeting, Hussein al-Hureiti, head of the parliamentary committee, said the fresh changes would ensure judicial independence financially and administratively.
The judicial authority will have a general secretariat representing the Supreme Judicial Council, and there will be assistant secretaries-general for financial and administrative affairs, he said, citing the judicial amendments.
Retirement age for Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti judges will be extended from 70 to 75 years for the good of the Kuwaiti society, he said.
However, the government said it would need enough time to carefully ponder over the changes, the committee head noted.
The committee voiced some reservations at overtures pertinent to civil and social rights for bedoun or stateless people in the country, al-Hureiti said. (end) msh.mz.abd.mt KUNA 061817 Oct 09NNNN
