DAMASCUS, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- The Director General of Arab Center for the
Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) Rafiq Ali Saleh praised on Friday
the outcome of Kuwait's Arab economic summit and decisions taken in the
various fields of development and in particular water resources.
The Director who participated in the summit which was hosted by Kuwait told
KUNA that such a summit was the first in terms of approving several projects
as part of a strategy to achieve economic integration and development in the
Arab world.
Saleh noted that such step would directly reflect on improving Arab living
standards, Arab economic conditions and social development.
The official added that the Kuwaiti summit was the first in which Arab
specialized organizations, including the private sector, jointly held
discussion on projects related to food security and water resources.
Since the early 90's, Saleh said ACSAD cautioned the Arab world on the
dangers of water shortage and warned that water and food could become
endangered they were'nt tackled as a pressing issue on the highest level.
Established in 1968 in Syria, ACSAD aims at developing scientific
agricultural research in the arid and semi-arid areas.
ACSAD is a specialized Arab organization working within the framework of
the League of Arab States with the objective of unifying Arab efforts in
helping the exchange of information and experiences and in making use of the
scientific progress and modern agricultural techniques in order to increase
agricultural production. (end)
