48 LTTE rebels, five gov''t soldiers killed in N. Sri Lanka

NEW DELHI, June 28 (KUNA) -- As many as 48 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and five soldiers have been killed in fresh clashes as security forces captured several areas in Mannar region in Northern Sri Lanka.
Eleven LTTE cadres were killed in clashes in Andankulam as troopers gained full control over 13 sq kms surrounding the Andankulam area yesterday.
As many as 21 Tiger rebels were killed at Papamoddai and Neduvarampu in Mannar yesterday, Sri Lankan Defence Ministry said in a statement Saturday.
At least 12 LTTE cadres were and three soldiers were killed in north-eastern Welioya yesterday, Sri Lankan Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
Three LTTE rebels and one soldier were killed in North Janakapura area in Welioya also on yesterday, the MCNS said.
In another incident, one LTTE rebel was gunned down in Kaluwankerni in Eastern Batticaloa today.
