64 killed in seperate LTTE-Army clashes in Northern Sri Lanka

NEW DELHI, Feb 12 (KUNA) -- At least 64 people were killed in fresh clashes in the battle fatigued northern region of Sri Lanka.
Six government soldiers were killed and several injured when Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels attacked the Thallady military base in Mannar Tuesday, news agency Press Trust of India reported quoting a Sri Lankan Army officer.
In a separate incident, two LTTE cadres were killed in Alakallakottakulam in Vavuniya today, the officer said.
Four LTTE cadres were gunned down by security forces in Sripurama and Nedunkandal areas of Mannar yesterday. In another clash, seven rebels were killed in Kokkuduthuduvai in northeastern Welioya yesterday while 13 LTTE cadres were killed and 21 injured in Anandakulam, the news agency said.
Ten soldiers also lost their lives during confrontations in Welioya yesterday, the officer said.
Eight rebels were killed in Udayankulam while five other rebels were gunned down in Mullikulam area of Vavuniya. Four more rebels were killed in Kallikulam yesterday.
Five rebels were killed at Periyapantrivirichchan in Vavuniya yesterday, Sri Lanka's Media Centre for National Security said today. (end) dr.tg KUNA 122256 Feb 08NNNN
