(with photos) KUWAIT, June 2 (KUNA) -- The Environmental Protection Society's diving team installed on Saturday 20 marine buoys around the islands of Umm Maradem and Garoh to mark coral reef locations.
Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the team's marine locations' officer, Mahmoud Ashkanani, said some divers fed coral reef fish, causing imbalance in the marine environment.
He clarified, such efforts put by the Environment Public Authority (EPA), came within a plan aimed at protecting the marine environment.
A marine buoy is a floating fiberglass object, tied with a thick metal cable, with a flashing light signal.
Buoys are placed within a 10-meter radius around coral reefs, giving approaching fishermen ample time to slow down speed of their boats and turn away from the marked spots, he said.
The diving team's work is aimed at encouraging volunteer work, and curbing pollution in the marine environment, in addition to training national labor in the field of marine missions and diving. (end) hny.aa.asa KUNA 021144 Jun 07NNNN
