Passport deadline day for 3,000 football hooligans
LONDON, May 30 (KUNA) -- More than 3,000 football hooligans have until
today to surrender their passports to police ahead of the World Cup finals in
Germany, it was reported here Tuesday.
Some 3,286 people with football banning orders have received letters
instructing them to hand in their passports, the BBC said.
With the tournament set to kick off next week, they will also be required
to attend a police station each time England play. Those that fail to do so
could face six months in jail and a 5,000 pounds fine.
The BBC reported that four Crown Prosecution Service lawyers would be
travelling to Germany to liaise with local courts when English trouble-makers
are charged.
A spokesman for the British Home Office said some 3,286 people have been
given banning orders which require them to hand in their passports at a
designated police station ten days before the World Cups opening match.
Up to 100,000 England fans are expected to travel to Germany for the
competition, according to the tournaments organizing committee.
Nearly 90 British police officers will travel to Germany for the event and
the Crown Prosecution Service will work with German police to prosecute
trouble-makers from England, the Home Office spokesman added. (end)
