Palm trees constitute 89 percent of fruitful trees in Kuwait By Khaled Al-Zaid (with photos) KUWAIT, Sept 14 (KUNA) -- Palm trees in Kuwait are not only famous for their historical and religious value but also for their unique ability to grow in harsh environments -- this is reflected in the fact that up to 89 percent of fruitful trees in the country are palms.
The Kuwaiti people are keen on planting palm trees in their gardens, specially, Khlas, Samaran and Berhi trees for each kind is distinguished with a special, good flavor.
In celebrating the Arab Palm Tree day, the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources Affairs (PAAFRA) is to hold a celebration on Sunday under the patronage of PAAFRA's Director and Board Chairman, Sheikh Fahd Al-Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah.
Palm trees in Kuwait are estimated to be around 89 percent of the fruitful trees in the country, with 16 fruit-bearing trees found in every one square kilometer of the total territory of the country.
When Kuwait hosted the Gulf Summit in 1984, the Al-Taawon Street was planted with hundreds of palm trees and with the increasing demand, PAAFRA launched the 3.970 KD Amgara project, the first in the Gulf region to care for researches of palm trees and dates industry.
In 2000, PAAFRA sold the fruit of 700 palm trees, worth 1,515 KD, from the experiment plantation area in an auction.
The moderate warm and hot weather in most of the Arab region is the most appropriate environment for palm trees making the Arab world the first in growing palm trees in the world. (more) kz.jsy KUNA 141810 Sep 02NNNN
