UK announces biggest sanctions against Russia's oil revenues, other sectors

LONDON, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- The UK announced on Tuesday its biggest sanctions package against Russia, which targeted the latter's oil revenues.
A government statement indicated that the new batch of sanctions would hinder Russia's four-year "unlawful" war against Ukraine, adding that the package, the largest since 2022, targets one of the world's largest oil pipeline, PJSC Transneft, representing 80 percent of Russia's oil export.
In a statement while in Kiev, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said, "The UK has today taken decisive action to disrupt the critical financing, military equipment and revenue streams that sustain Russia's aggression, in our largest raft of measures since the early months of the invasion." She added, "Today I'm in Kyiv announcing GBP 30 million in funding to strengthen Ukrainian energy resilience and support recovery, taking the total UK support to GBP 21.8 billion since the start of the war." The UK's new batch of sanctions targets 49 entities and individuals involved in the Russian war against Ukraine, three civil nuclear energy companies, two individuals involved in securing contracts for new Russian nuclear installations overseas, six targets in Russia's Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) industry, and nine Russian banks.
Earlier today, Britain said that Prime Minister Keir Starmer will notify a meeting for the Coalition of the Willing, which includes French President Emmanuel Macron, that his country intends to deploy troops in Ukraine once peace is secured.
The proposed Multinational Force for Ukraine consists of an up-and-running 70-person headquarter and preparations for UK forces are backed by GBP 200 million from the government.
Britain also vowed more military and humanitarian support to Ukraine against its war with Russia. (end) gta
