BRUSSELS, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- European Commission Spokesperson Olof Gill affirmed that Brussels is awaiting precise clarifications from the US regarding the implications of the US Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs, stressing that the EU cannot take further steps until the situation becomes fully clear.
Gill told reporters in Brussels, "We look forward to our American counterparts explaining to us precisely what is happening," adding, "we simply request clarification from the United States so we can determine what will happen next".
He explained that the EU is interested in returning to "a situation of stability and predictability" with regard to US tariffs, in light of the uncertainty that followed the Supreme Court's ruling on the authority to impose such duties.
European Parliament negotiators held an urgent meeting earlier Monday to consider whether to delay granting the green light to a trade agreement, while lawmakers from the main political groups voiced support for temporarily putting the deal on hold until the implications of the US ruling become clearer.
In the same context, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said in a post on (X) that he participated in a call of G7 trade ministers addressing critical raw materials supply chains, World Trade Organization reform and the latest developments in relations with the United States.
Sefcovic added, "Stability and predictability are top priorities for our businesses," stressing that he reiterated during the call that "full respect for the EU-US agreement is paramount."
He noted that he remains in contact with his counterparts to "secure reassurances" and ensure clarity regarding the next steps.
The US Supreme Court had ruled that President Donald Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs, particularly following the announcement of new 15 percent global duties set to enter into force on Tuesday. (end)
