ONS: UK higher tax receipts lead to record January surplus

LONDON, Feb 20 (KUNA) -- The UK government's finances witnessed a GBP 30.4 billion surplus in January due to higher tax receipts than spending, said data by the National Office for Statistics on Friday.
According to the ONS, this is the highest surplus in any month since records began in 1993, without adjusting for inflation, adding that the figure doubled from last January's GBP 15.4 billion surplus.
Usually in January, the government collects more tax than it spends compared to other months. Analysts had predicted a GBP 23.8 surplus for January.
The ONS revealed that the money from tax in January was at GBP 133.3 billion, a 13.8 percent increase from the same numbers in January of 2025.
It added that although government spending did not change, the highest-ever record surplus came from strong revenues and lower interest rates. (end) gta
