US State Sec. highlights Vietnam, Indonesia Indo-Pacific security partnerships

WASHINGTON, Feb 20 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed the importance of strategic partnerships with Vietnam and Indonesia in supporting security and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific, a region Washington prioritizes amid intensifying geopolitical competition with China.
Rubio made the remarks during separate meetings in Washington with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, where discussions focused on cooperation, regional stability, and shared strategic interests between the countries.
In a statement issued late Thursday, the US State Department said Rubio affirmed the importance of the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam in facilitating peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region, while advancing long-term mutual economic and security objectives.
The statement added that both sides reiterated the need to deepen cooperation in areas of shared interest, including critical minerals and energy security, noting these sectors represent essential pillars for strengthening economic resilience and enhancing regional security frameworks.
During a separate meeting with the Indonesian foreign minister, the two sides affirmed that their comprehensive strategic partnership contributes significantly to promoting an Indo-Pacific region that is safe, stable, and prosperous, while expanding mutually beneficial economic and security cooperation.
The statement noted Rubio expressed appreciation to Vietnam and Indonesia for supporting the Peace Council as founding members and conveyed gratitude to Indonesia for its commitment to post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Gaza, as Washington seeks broader international support. (end) asj.ahm
