BRUSSELS, Feb 12 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament called on Thursday for stepping up international support for the Syrian transitional government and enhancing humanitarian assistance in north-east Syria, in light of the deterioration of security and humanitarian conditions and the continued suffering of civilians.
In a resolution on the situation in north-east Syria, Parliament reaffirmed its condemnation of all acts of violence against civilians, stressing the need for all parties to abide by the ceasefire, respect international humanitarian law, and protect civilian infrastructure.
MEPs referred to UN and human rights reports that spoke of serious violations, including extrajudicial killings, forced displacement and indiscriminate attacks, particularly against the Kurdish population, calling for urgent international action to support stability and protect civilians.
The Parliament welcomed the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian transitional government, stressing the importance of supporting it politically and humanitarianly to ensure the success of the transitional phase and to enhance the protection of the rights of all components, in a manner that preserves Syria's unity and territorial integrity.
The European Union was also urged to increase humanitarian assistance to Syria and to support the efforts of the transitional government in achieving stability and preventing the return of Daesh, in a way that threatens the security of the country and the region.
The resolution was adopted by 363 votes in favour, 71 against, with 81 abstentions. (end)
