WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump said that the American delegation held "very good" talks with Iran following indirect discussions between the two sides in the Omani capital, Muscat, which could help spare the region further escalation.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida late Friday, Trump said, "We've had very good talks with Iran. It seems that Iran very much wants to reach an agreement."
There was still sufficient time to reach a deal with Tehran, noting that delegations from both sides are scheduled to meet again early next week, he added.
Trump has been urging Iran since late last month to conclude what he described as a "fair and equitable" agreement regarding its nuclear program to avoid "a much worse attack" than the US operation dubbed "Midnight Hammer," which targeted three Iranian nuclear sites last June.
Earlier, Trump signed an executive order reaffirming the continuation of the national emergency related to Iran and establishing a mechanism to impose tariffs on countries that purchase any goods from Tehran, despite ongoing negotiations between the two sides in Muscat and renewed threats of military action against Iran.
