US strike on Pacific drug smuggling vessel kills two

WASHINGTON, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- The US Southern Command affirmed late Friday that two were killed in a military strike on a drug smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific.
In a statement posted on X, the Command said, "at the direction of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations." Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting known narco-trafficking routes and was actively engaged in illicit operations, it added The statement said two drug traffickers were killed in strike, while a third individual survived.
The US administration had informed Congress in early September that the US was engaged in an "armed conflict" with what it described as "terrorist drug cartels" in the Caribbean region. (end) amm.sar
