DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 21 (KUNA) -- US President Donald J. Trump announced that he would not proceed with the tariffs, that were scheduled to affect eight European countries as from February 1, after reaching a deal with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Greenland.
In a post on his Truth Social platform following his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, Trump said the "very productive" talks resulted in "the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and in fact the entire Arctic Region."
"This solution if consummated will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO Nations," he said.
Trump also noted that consultations are still underway regarding what he referred to as "The Golden Dome" in relation to Greenland indicating that "further information will be made available as discussions progress.
He also said the negotiations will be led by Vice President JD Vance Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff alongside other officials as needed.
Earlier today during his speech in the annual meeting of the world economic forum Trump stressed the need to negotiate with European parties over what he described as the United States "returning Greenland" arguing that Washington has given much to NATO while receiving little in return.
On Saturday US president threatened that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland would face 10 percent tariffs on their exports to the United States if an agreement on Greenland was not reached by February 1. (pickup previous)
