MADRID, Jan 21 (KUNA) -- Spanish state television reported that a train driver was killed and 15 passengers were injured after a retaining wall collapsed onto a railway track and a passenger train struck it in the Catalonia region.
The broadcaster said late Tuesday, the wall collapsed due to a landslide while the train, carrying 37 passengers, was traveling between two towns in Barcelona province in northeastern Spain, noting that four of the injured are in critical condition.
Quoting local authorities, it explained that the driver, who was inside the front cabin of the train, died from his injuries, while other injuries were distributed among passengers in the first carriage and the remaining cars.
Firefighting, emergency and Civil Guard teams took part in rescue and medical operations, it added, noting that authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident and the causes of the wall's collapse, which coincided with heavy rainfall in the region in recent hours.
