BERLIN, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that the European Union (EU) is able to respond to recent tariff threats by U.S. President Donald Trump against several European countries due to their support for Denmark over Greenland.
"If we are confronted with tariffs that we consider unreasonable, then we can react," he said in a press statement, adding that this will be discussed during this Thursday's EU emergency summit.
However, he recognized that U.S. tariffs would negatively affect European economies, particularly the German economy, emphasizing that it is necessary to find a solution to this crisis.
The German chancellor's remarks came following U.S. President Donald Trump's vow to impose additional tariffs on a number of European countries, mainly Germany, due to their solidarity with Denmark, which rejects U.S. attempts to control Greenland. (end)
