MOSCOW, Jan 14 (KUNA) -- The Russian Federation on Wednesday reaffirmed its firm position in support of Venezuela, based on respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, describing the US' operation in Venezuela as a blatant violation of international law.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in remarks to RIA Novosti that Moscow maintains a long history of strong strategic ties with Venezuela, stressing Russia's full commitment to all agreements reached between the two countries.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia's position is "principled and grounded in respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states," noting that Moscow continues to view the US operation in Venezuela as illegal.
He explained that the Venezuelan leadership is currently defending its national priorities and sovereignty while seeking to engage in international relations based on sovereign equality and independence.
Lavrov expressed hope that all parties, including the US, would respect these universal principles.
The Russian foreign minister criticized what he described as attempts by Western European countries and Washington's allies to evade objective assessments, despite what he called the clear violation of international law by the United States.
On Iran, Lavrov said that no third party can alter the nature of ties between Moscow and Tehran, stressing that these relations are based on signed agreements between the leaderships of both countries and serve the interests of their states and peoples.
He underscored the importance of continuing efforts to implement bilateral agreements, adding that the European Union is using Iran to divert public attention from developments related to Greenland.
On the Ukrainian crisis, Lavrov said that achieving lasting peace is only possible by addressing the root causes of the conflict, reiterating that Moscow remains open to negotiations on Ukraine, provided they are serious and clear.
Lavrov's remarks come amid continued political and security developments at the regional and international levels. (end)
