JEDDAH, Dec 24 (KUNA) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday welcomed a recently concluded prisoner swap agreement in Yemen as a significant humanitarian step towards mitigating the humanitarian anguish and beefing up confidence-building opportunities.
In a press release, the OIC touted the good offices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the conclusion of Yemen's prisoner exchange negotiations.
The Jeddah-based Islamic bloc hoped that this agreement would contribute to promoting peace and stability in Yemen and alleviating the suffering and woes of the Yemeni people, according to the release.
The OIC restated its unwavering support for all ongoing efforts that aim at achieving Yemen's peace, peace and stability in a way that fulfills the expectations of the Yemeni people.
The Yemeni government had reached an agreement with the Houthi militia to release 2,900 prisoners and detainees from both sides, during the 10th round of negotiations held over a period of 12 days in the Omani capital, Muscat, in the presence of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg. (end)
