GENEVA, Dec 10 (KUNA) -- The Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin on Wednesday won the presidency of the Swiss Confederation for 2026 after securing 203 votes out of 228 the highest result recorded since the start of the current century.
In a session held in Bern the Swiss Parliament elected Parmelin to succeed current President Karin Keller-Sutter, according to local media.
Parmelin is the current Swiss Federal Councillor and head of the Department of Economic Affairs Education and Research Parmelin, he is a member of the Swiss People's Party (UDC) the right-wing party and this mandate marks his second term as head of state after first serving as president in 2021 and he has previously served as Minister of Defense.
Parmelin played a key role this year in reaching an agreement with the United States under which Washington reduced customs duties on certain Swiss products. (end) imk.gb
