The 49th Conference of Arab Police and Security Leaders
TUNIS, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- The 49th Conference of Arab Police and Security Leaders on Thursday urged member states to update national legislation to cover all chemicals used in synthetic drugs, and to tighten controls on their import, export and circulation to prevent diversion into illicit activities.
The General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers said in a statement that Arab police chiefs stressed the need to establish specialized units to counter synthetic drug manufacturing networks and provide them with the required technical expertise.
They also called for comprehensive national awareness campaigns targeting youth and families on the health, psychological and social risks of synthetic drugs, and underlined the importance of marking the Arab Week for Drug Prevention and Control, requesting coordination with member states in this regard.
The conference asked the General Secretariat to coordinate with the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation to strengthen Euro-Arab cooperation against synthetic drugs and support joint security efforts in addressing regional challenges.
The conference opened Wednesday chaired by Kuwait, represented by Director General of Border Security and Coast Guard Affairs Major General Mujbil Al-Rashidi, with the participation of Arab security directors.
Discussions focused on trends and emerging threats linked to synthetic drugs, outstanding security practices among member states, and the outcomes of this year's sectoral meetings.
Kuwait's delegation included Brig. Sunaidan Al-Mutairi, Col. Abdulhadi Al-Mayyas, Col. (Legal) Hiba Bousaffar, Lt. Col. Nawaf Al-Saeedi, Capt. Ahmad Al-Mutar and first Lt. Aliya Al-Azmi. (end)
