Egypt's parl't speaker: Euro-Mediterranean region faces "unprecedented" challenges

CAIRO, Nov 29 (KUNA) -- Speaker of Egypt's House of Representatives Hanafy Al-Jebaly said on Saturday the Euro-Mediterranean region is witnessing "unprecedented" challenges and extended political unrest and conflicts as well as regional tensions which threaten collective security and affect the region's stability and security.
Al-Jebali made the statement while inaugurating the Parliamentary Assembly forum of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) and the summit of parliaments' speakers hosted by Egypt's House of Representatives in line with marking the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process.
The process for which we are gathering today has formed a cornerstone of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership so it has been placed as the most important international examples for comprehensive regional cooperation, he said.
The forum is a real opportunity to review the Euro-Mediterranean partnership path to assess what has been achieved and look at challenges facing this region as a single civilizational space with an interconnected destiny that cannot be separated, he stated.
He noted that Egypt hosted Sharm El-Sheikh peace summit to constitute a base and a roadmap for a comprehensive and permanent peace in the whole Middle East region.
The forum is featuring Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives and head of the assembly Mohammad Abu El-Enein, President of the Arab Parliament Mohammad Al-Yamahy and others. (end) asm.mak.hm
