Marking their day, OIC underlines women's empowerment, protection
JEDDAH, Nov 24 (KUNA) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Monday restated its commitment to backing member states' fight against "digital violence" and promoting women's empowerment and protecting women and girls from all walks of life.
In a press release marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the OIC cautioned against alarmingly surging violence through internet, artificial intelligence (AI)-based identity theft and the sharing of content without consent, which growingly targets women and girls, especially journalists, activists, and public figures.
It underlined that digital violence marks continued abuse against women's safety, psychological condition, economic participation and freedom of expression.
The Jeddah-based OIC called on all member states to promote legal protection, punish digital platforms, overhaul legislation pertinent to digital crimes and revamp digital culture in a way that complies with the organization's plan of improving women's status, and relevant ministerial decisions.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is annually held on November 25 on the basis of a United Nations (UN) Resolution urging governments and world nongovernment organizations to organize an international event to raise awareness about violence against women worldwide.
