EU launches "RAISE" initiative to boost use of AI in scientific research

BRUSSELS, Nov 3 (KUNA) -- The European Commission launched on Monday the pilot phase of the RAISE project, a new European resource for artificial intelligence in the field of science.
In a press release, the Commission said that this new virtual institute represents one of the key initiatives under the European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science, aiming to consolidate essential resources for developing AI technologies and applying them to support major scientific breakthroughs from improving cancer treatments to addressing environmental challenges, predicting the impacts of earthquakes, and advancing other vital scientific fields.
It explained that the projectآ’s pilot phase will be funded with 107 million euros under the Horizon Europe programme.
The statement added that the RAISE project builds on Europeآ’s proven ability to confront complex challenges through collective action, contributing to the Unionآ’s goals of placing science and technology at the core of the European economy, strengthening its leadership in fundamental research, ensuring innovation serves humanity, and attracting global talent to choose Europe as a hub for research and development.
It noted that the project will operate as a virtual European institute that combines key AI resources including computing power, data, talent, and research funding from EU Member States and the private sector, to advance cutting-edge AI research and foster AI driven scientific progress.
The statement indicated that the initiative is based on four main pillars including enhancing computing capacity with 600 million euros to provide advanced computational power for researchers; supporting data development to facilitate its use in AI research; promoting excellence and skills through training programmes and 75 million euros in funding; and doubling annual EU research investments in AI to exceed three billion euros under the Horizon Europe programme.
The European Commission had previously launched in October 2025 the European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science, aimed at strengthening Europeآ’s technological and scientific leadership by harnessing the potential of AI technologies to advance research, within the framework of the European action plan known as the "AI Continent".
