DOHA, Nov 3 (KUNA) -- His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is to represent His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in the Second World Summit for Social Development, to be held in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
The major UN-sponsored event marks 30 years since the first World Summit for Social Development and the adoption of the Copenhagen Declaration and Program of Action -- a bold and ambitious promise to place people at the center of development. Through 10 foundational commitments, world leaders pledged to eradicate poverty, promote full employment, and build inclusive, just and resilient societies. It was a vision for the 21st century, grounded in dignity, equity and shared prosperity.
Last September, Qatari Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina Al-Nuaimi said the Summit is expected to constitute a fundamental milestone in charting the future directions of the social development agenda and promoting sustainable development paths worldwide.
For her part, Sheikh Alya Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Delegate to the UN, during a briefing in New York, said that with the expected adoption of the Doha Political Declaration, the Second World Summit for Social Development offers a chance not only to recommit to the promise of Copenhagen in 1995, but also to accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Hosting this historic summit in Doha underscores the State of Qatar's position as an active and strategic partner of the United Nations, she said, highlighting that the Summit will bring together more than 8,000 participants representing Member States, the United Nations system, and key stakeholders -- including parliamentarians, civil society organizations, youth, academia, and representatives of workers, employers, and the private sector -- all united in reaffirming their commitment to social justice and translating that commitment into concrete actions that place people at the heart of sustainable development.
Sheikha Alya underlined that the "Doha Political Declaration" will be viewed as a global call to action that renews governments' commitment to creating an enabling economic, political, social, cultural, and legal environment for achieving inclusive social development for all.
She further pointed out that several key events will take place during the summit, leveraging this global gathering -- most notably the inaugural meeting of the "Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty."
The Summit, to last until November 6, will also witness a significant milestone with the convening of the "Doha Solutions Forum for Social Development," which represents a turning point toward adopting innovative and practical initiatives. (end)
