ICRC: World leaders must act to end the indiscriminate killing in Sudan

GENEVA, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mirjana Spoljaric Egger on Friday expressed concern over the killing of five staff members of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society this week in the North Kordofan State.
The ICRC president called on world leaders to act urgently to end the indiscriminate killing and horrific violations taking place in Sudan particularly in Al Fasher. In a statement issued in Geneva, Spoljaric described what is happening in Sudan as "an unjustifiable humanitarian catastrophe and a flagrant violation of the rules of war" stressing that these horrific attacks must stop and that international humanitarian law must be respected.
She emphasized that the world has turned a blind eye while civilians in Sudan have endured unthinkable horror.
Despite continued calls on the parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law yet it continues to be violated with impunity, the ICRC chief said.
She warned that civilians are enduring brutal attacks, rampant sexual violence and the deliberate destruction of essential services adding that facilities once dedicated to saving lives have become scenes of death and destruction.
Spoljaric urged Leaders to show political courage to stop the killing and ensure that parties to the conflict return to the rules of war. "All states have the obligation not only to uphold international humanitarian law in their own conduct but also ensure that others do the same." she stressed. (End) imk.rk
