IFRC "horrified" at killing of 5 Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers

GENEVA, Oct 28 (KUNA) -- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Tuesday said it was "horrified, shocked and deeply saddened" by the killing of five volunteers of the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) who were on duty in the city of (Bara) North Kordofan on October 27, expressing concern over three more volunteers still missing.
In a statement, IFRC reported that the SRC team was on an official mission as part of a food distribution team in Bara.
According to the statement, the volunteers were clearly identified by wearing Red Crescent vests, which are supposed to provide them with full protection and carried identification cards issued by the local branch.
"Any attack on humanitarian teams is unacceptable. We strongly reiterate our call for unwavering respect for the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems and the crucial humanitarian services they represent," IFRC said.
It further pointed out that the SRC has lost 21 colleagues on duty since the start of the conflict. (end) imk.hb
