NEW YORK, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai underlined Friday the significant role of the UN as the "optimum framework" of addressing joint challenges.
Speaking to KUNA on the occasion of the UN Day, which falls on October 24th, Al-Banai said that this year's anniversary comes at a time when the world is witnessing rapid global transformations and mounting challenges, making commitment to UN principles and international multilateralism and cooperation more significant than ever.
He added that since the UN system is at a crossroads, further concerted efforts should be exerted to ensure abidance by law, justice and mutual respect, vowing that his country would keep backing international efforts to achieve peace and security and promote sustainable development and respect of human rights.
He stressed that it has become essential to reform the comprehensive international system, including the UN Security Council (UNSC) with a view to ensuring more effectiveness and broader justice in member states' representation, thus strengthening the credibility of the system's resolutions and response to global crises.
Al-Banai highlighted over six decades of close cooperative relations between the State of Kuwait and the UN, regarding them as a model to follow in view of strategic partnership between a member state and the UN system.
In this context, the Kuwaiti diplomat added that the State of Kuwait has always been supportive of the UN efforts of peace, development and human rights.
He reiterated his country's unwavering commitment to the principles and goals of the UN Charter, and its deep belief in international dialogue, understanding and cooperation as the sole way out of addressing global challenges and attaining safer, fairer and more sustainable future for generations to come.
He emphasized that Kuwait would keep playing its pioneering humanitarian and developmental role by means of relentlessly backing UN organizations and programs, and would even remain as an effective partner in the alleviation of humanitarian woes in regions hit by conflicts and crises.
The Kuwaiti Permanent Representative to the UN cited humanitarian action as a core pillar of his country's foreign policy.
He called for building on the output of the Summit of the Future held in New York last year as a crucial step towards developing the international action system and promoting accountability and transparency mechanisms.
Al-Banai spoke highly of the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in following up on the recommendations and goals of the Summit of the Future.
He concluded by considering the UN not only an occasion to mark the system and its achievements but also a renewed call for promoting international integration and establishing the culture of peace and joint development.
The United Nations Day, on October 24, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
