KUWAIT, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- Minister of Oil and President of the Supreme Environmental Council Dr. Tareq Al-Roumi on Thursday affirmed the GCC leaders' support for joint action among the member states.
He also assertedtheir permanent keenness on protecting the environment and render it as an inseparable part of the comprehensive and sustainable development.
Dr. Al-Roumi, speaking during the 27th meeting of the GCC environment officials, stated that leaders of the council member countries are keen on making environment protection a national and regional priority, in the shadow of the global climatic challenges that require cooperation, integration and policies to ensure environment sustainability.
This meeting aims at bolstering the GCC march in the environmental sphere, finding solutions based on science and knowledge that face global challenges namely the climatic change for attaining humankind welfare as well as sustainability of the natural resources, the minister said.
The State of Kuwait is exerting relentless efforts in the environmental sector, in line with its adherence to international treaties, the minister said. Kuwait is also keen on supporting the Gulf environmental initiatives and projects, he added, indicating at pursuing cooperation with the brotherly states, backing up joint Gulf projects for attaining a clean, safe and sustainable environment.
Meanwhile, GCC Secretary General Jassem Al-Budaiwi said in his speech at the session that the GCC countries, in recent years, witnessed qualitative development in environmental action and their obligations were translated into ambitious initiatives and leading ventures.
Cutting emissions and increasing dependence on renewable energy have become basis for the GCC policies aimed at adopting low-carbon economies that balance between economic development and preserving the natural resources, Al-Budaiwi said.
While affirming their unwavering keenness on honoring to global obligations, the GCC states have adopted programs to diversify energy resources, rationalizing consumption, expand usage of treated water, invest in clean energy and hydrogen and recycling, he added. (end)
