Kremlin: upcoming Russian-US Summit key to advancing Ukraine peace talks
MOSCOW, Oct 20 (KUNA) - The Kremlin said Monday that the anticipated summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could provide a genuine opportunity to push forward a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
In an official statement, the Kremlin stressed the importance of utilizing the summit to discuss bilateral ties and key international issues, adding that lasting peace in Ukraine requires balanced approaches from all parties.
The statement noted "Kyiv's inconsistent stance", saying it hinders comprehensive political solutions, while reaffirming Russia's commitment to dialogue and direct negotiations.
It added that Budapest was selected to host the summit due to strong ties between the two presidents and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, although full preparations for the meeting have yet to begin.
Putin and Trump last spoke on October 16 in their eighth call this year, lasting around two and a half hours. Following the call, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed plans to begin preparations for the summit, likely to be held in the Hungarian capital.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also confirmed the formation of a special committee to organize the summit, expressing hope it would contribute to advancing peace efforts in Ukraine. (end) dan.seo
